Knowledge that is not transmitted
There is a popular saying that reads the following: “nobody learns in the head of others”, however, we believe that the knowledge that is not transmitted is simply an empty knowledge. Therefore, in this opportunity we want to share with you what we have learned in our path of researchers.
Although being a good thesis student means working hard and, of course, following the letter of the methodology that we offer so faithfully; There are also a series of considerations that have more to do with intuition, perseverance and gratitude.
With this last one we do not refer to the gratitude that is placed in the preliminary pages, but to a much more silent and private thanks: that which is done by the books or sources of our thesis.
The intuition for the good thesis is in his capacity to advance affirmations, to propitiate answers and to prevent errors, equally in his treatment of the sources the use and value that confers them. Although this is something that gets to be perfected over time, the good thesis student knows that valuable information can be found anywhere and a revealing idea can come from any person or arise in unsuspected places.
Over time we can specialize in one area and be more selective with our work, but it is important to recognize that value can also be found where least expected, if we have the humility to recognize it.
So, if you want to be a good thesis you must be intuitive to identify ideas that do not depend on space, but on your perception of them. Persevere in your search, do not discard any source without first studying it, do not catalog or disqualify what you do not know. Make use of your judgment, but after learning and knowing for sure what you want to say.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE VALUE
To recognize it, pride and false beliefs must be set aside. Even the most recondite source, the most unknown author or the dustiest book can have some value. Maybe they do not have it for you, however, for others if and for that reason the sources should be treated with respect.
A very fat book does not have to be better for your thesis than another with fewer pages. Nor will a famous author necessarily find you more useful than someone who has just published his first work.
Another very frequent mistake among the students is to discard the sources without even going through the introduction first or eliminating them without flipping through the index. Also, there are cases in which they follow blindly the comments of others about sources of information without worrying about creating their own judgment. The recommendations are useful, as long as we do an evaluation ourselves.
Worse are the cases of those who visit web pages of summaries or prefabricated tasks, because they aspire to get a “free pass” in the work of the thesis. In these situations the student must be honest and clarify their academic pretensions, it may be that studying is not theirs.
Being an excellent student is not only getting high marks, this is simply the result of the exercise of critical thinking and reflective judgment. Think that, in the end, it is what is expected of you in the thesis. It is not possible to hurry without making mistakes, the haste will only precipitate you to error. If you want to be successful, evaluate everything thoroughly, this final step is the decisive test of your university education.
